Recent developments on the institutional mechanism of gender equality in Greece after the national elections on 7-7-2019 (Athens, July 2019)
The national elections for the Hellenic Parliament (300 seats) and the Government of Greece took place on Sunday 7th of July, 2019. The gender aspect of the results which led the right political party “New Democracy” in power, are the following:
A. Hellenic Parliament
Men MPs: 238 (percentage 79.33%)
Women MPs: 62 (percentage: 20.67%).
B. Government

51 Members:
Men: 46 (percentage: 90.20%)
Women: 5 (percentage: 9.80%).
Portfolios by Women:
– Minister for Education & Religious Affairs
– Vice Minister for Education & Religious Affairs in charge of Primary and Secondary Education, as well as Special Education
– Vice Minister for Labour & Social Affairs in charge of Welfare and Social Solidarity
– Minister for Culture & Sports
– Vice Minister for Rural Development & Food in charge of Fishing Policy.
C. The Gender Equality Issues
As far as the governmental organization in charge of gender equality is concerned, it is noted that the General Secretariat for Gender Equality has been transferred from the Ministry of Interior to the Ministry of Labour & Social Affairs and it has been renamed to “General Secretariat for Family Policy & Gender Equality” (relevant documentation in Greek: Presidential Decrees 81, article 4 and 84, article 7: http://www.isotita.gr/το-νέο-νομικό-πλαίσιο-της-γενικής-γραμ/ ).
According to the Government’s announcement, Ms Maria Syrengela, Vice President of the “Women of the European People’s Party”, will be appointed at the post of the “Secretary General for Family Policy & Gender Equality” (relevant link from the EPP Women: http://www.eppwomen.eu/about-epp-women/members-of-the-presidium/ ).
